2011 Opel Antara

With accentuated exterior design, new engines, newly tuned chassis and an upgraded interior, the Opel Antara combines sporty off-road flair with high utility value and urban chic in the 2011 model year.

The fully re-worked engine line-up consisting of two diesel units and one gasoline variant meets Euro 5 emissions standards and guarantees improved driving performance with significantly reduced consumption and emissions. The two available transmissions - a six-speed manual and an automatic - have also been completely newly developed.

The 2.2 CDTI diesel engine comes in two output levels. The 120 kW/163 hp entry level unit develops maximum torque of 350 Nm and is available combined with front or all-wheel drive and manual or automatic transmission. With fuel consumption of 6.3 l/100 km (CO2: 167 g/km), acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 189 km/h (all for front-wheel drive manual gearbox variant), this powertrain offers a balanced union of efficiency and dynamics.

The 135 kW/184 hp top-of-the-line diesel (maximum torque 400 Nm) comes standard with all-wheel drive, is available with both transmission choices and impresses with excellent driving performance (zero to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds; top speed 200 km/h). At the same time, this engine boasts high economy and environmental compatibility with fuel consumption of 6.6 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 175 g/km).

Alternative to the diesel engines, the 2.4 ECOTEC gasoline engine with 123 kW/167 hp and 230 Nm maximum torque is available with front-wheel drive and manual transmission or all-wheel drive coupled with manual or automatic gearbox. Featuring acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds, a maximum speed of 190 km/h, fuel consumption of 8.8 l/km and CO2 emissions of 206 g/km (manual front-wheel drive version), it leaves virtually nothing to be desired.

Intelligent all-wheel drive system with variable power distribution

The Opel Antara's electronically controlled all-wheel drive system combines the advantages of a front-wheel drive - such as low fuel consumption - with the traction benefits of an all-wheel drive. While the engine normally powers the front wheels, prevailing driving conditions are continuously monitored by the control electronics.

If inadequate traction threatens to cause front-axle slippage, the system seamlessly redistributes power. Depending on the driving situation and outside conditions, the power distribution range spans from 100 percent front-wheel drive to 50 percent on both front and rear axles, and all variations in between.

New chassis fine-tuning with dynamic character

To match its lively engines, the updated Opel Antara now features a completely newly tuned chassis that combines driving fun and agility with high travelling comfort. The speed-dependent power steering has also been enhanced and now offers even more direct road contact.

Refinements to the chassis and active safety include improvements to the ABS system and the standard fitting of Hill Start Assist (HSA) which prevents roll-back when driving away on grades. Depending on model variant and equipment, distinctive alloy wheels in 17, 18 or 19 inch format contribute to refined handling and the eye-catching looks of the sporty crossover.

Refreshed design with clear brand identity

The new Opel Antara's accentuated exterior design sports an updated front grille with chrome bezel, characteristic brand chrome cross bar and a bold logo. The chic crossover also boasts new fog lights, rear lights with new graphics and a distinctive underride protection panel in front and rear.

The refreshed interior offers new, upscale trim and upholstery, instruments with new graphics, a re-designed center console with extra storage solutions and the elegant leather trim option Light Titanium. Improved safety and comfort features include electric parking brake, a gear display for manual operation in the automatic variants, deactivation of front and side airbags on front passenger side to enable mounting of a child safety seat, seat-belt pretensioners and belt force limiters in front as well as a tire repair kit.

Strong alternative in European mid-size SUV segment

With its attractive looks, state-of-the-art powertrain line-up, active chassis tuning and upscale interior, the Opel Antara is a strong contender in its segment. The sporty crossover also offers excellent value for money: the 123 kW/167 hp 2.4 ECOTEC gasoline unit in the Selection version with front-wheel drive is a very affordable entry level into the Antara model line for a base price of 26,780 euros.

The Opel Antara's all-around update showcases Opel's strategy to put more focus on existing traditions, potential and expertise and to revitalize them with attractive products. In this case the tradition is based on the Frontera that was built between 1991 and 2003, with the upgraded Antara marking a fresh start. The SUV and crossover segment will play a more important role in the brand's product portfolio with the goal of strengthening Opel's position in the European automotive market. The next step in this direction is the compact SUV planned for 2012.

The European market strategy for the Opel Antara foresees sales of more than 15,000 units in its debut year 2011; thereafter annual sales of 20,000 are planned. Around 80 percent of sales are expected in the British, German, Italian and Russian markets. The 163 hp diesel variant is expected to be the biggest seller, accounting for around 75 percent of sales.

Exciting Addition to Mid-size SUV Segment

The mid-size SUV segment in Western Europe has consistently grown in the last five years, with the exception of a slight dip during the global economic crisis in 2009. The SUV share of the entire passenger car market nearly doubled during this time, from 2.2 percent (2005) to 4.2 percent (January - October 2010).

Research indicates that further growth is expected in this segment in the coming years. This vehicle class benefits from emotional factors like increasing status value compared to conventional sedans and station wagons, versatility and the ability to leave the beaten path - in this case paved roads - if necessary.

A further factor is the changing demographics in the European population. SUV and crossover models like the Antara are particularly popular among older customers who value the comfortable entry and egress as well as the increased feeling of safety offered by the higher seating position in these cars.

Strong competitive position with FlexFix bicycle carrier and an attractive price

With its chic looks, improved powertrain line-up, active chassis set-up and upscale practical interior, the Opel Antara has a strong competitive position. The new crossover's target groups are mostly in the progressive middle and social climber milieus, where an affinity for technology and progress is often very pronounced.

Many of these buyers pursue an active lifestyle, and with its integrated FlexFix bicycle carrier system, the Opel Antara offers this group an unrivalled competitive advantage. This is underlined by the attractive value for money it offers: the 123 kW/167 hp 2.4 ECOTEC gasoline unit in the Selection version with front-wheel drive is a very affordable entry level into the Opel Antara model line for a base price of 26,780 euros.

Product strategy: Stronger presence in SUV segment

The Antara's all-around update showcases Opel's strategy to put more focus on existing traditions, potential and expertise and to revitalize them with attractive products. In this case the tradition is based on the Frontera that was built between 1991 and 2003, and the upgraded Opel Antara represents a fresh start. The SUV and crossover segment will play a more important role in the brand's product portfolio with the goal of strengthening Opel's position in the European automotive market. The next step in this direction is the compact SUV planned for 2012.

"The Antara is not just a significantly improved car," says Alain Visser, Vice President Marketing, Sales and Aftersales. "It is also the kick-off for our return to the SUV segment. The Opel brand will be stronger and more present in this vehicle class in the future."

The European market strategy for the Opel Antara foresees sales of 15,000 units in its debut year 2011; thereafter annual sales of 20,000 are planned. Around 80 percent of sales are expected in the British, German, Italian and Russian markets. The 163 hp diesel variant is expected to be the biggest seller, accounting for around 75 percent of sales.

2.2 CDTI diesel engine: One of the most efficient in its class

The entry-level diesel is the 2.2 CDTI engine, which is available in two performance levels. The 120 kW/163 hp version can be combined with front or all-wheel drive as well as with manual or automatic transmission. The top 135 kW/184 hp version is also available with both transmission types, while all-wheel drive is standard with this engine.

With a maximum torque of 350 Nm from 1,750 - 2,750 rpm and combined fuel consumption of 6.3 l/100 km (CO2: 167 g/km) in the front-wheel drive manual transmission version, the 163 hp diesel is an attractive base engine for the Antara model line. Acceleration time of 9.9 seconds (zero to 100 km/h) and a top speed of 189 km/h testify to an excellent dynamic potential.

The 184 hp top-of-the-line diesel combined with all-wheel drive impresses with maximum torque of 400 Nm (1,750 - 2,750 rpm) and guarantees excellent handling, superior engine power and comfortable driving in all situations. A sprint time of 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h further demonstrate these qualities. At the same, economy and environmental compatibility remain priorities (fuel consumption: 6.6 l/100 km; emissions: 175 g/km CO2).

This new diesel unit is among the most efficient engines in its displacement class. High specific power output, low emissions, reduced noise and vibrational behavior as well as excellent handling and a long lifespan are ensured by the precise coordination of different components, systems and design features including:

Engine block with high structural rigidity (improved noise and vibrational behavior)
Engine block cooling jacket with horizontal cooling-fin design (optimized cooling)
Dual mass flywheel (reduced drivetrain vibration)
Oil-pump integrated balance shaft module (compactness, reduced engine vibration)
New DOHC aluminium cylinder head with variable swirl control (flow and swirl properties)
Watercooled turbocharger with charge air cooling and variable turbine geometry (cylinder charging and driveability)
Maintenance-free camshaft chain drive with automatic chain tensioner
Fuel injection pressure up to 1,800 bar (mixture preparation)
Compression ratio reduced to 16.3:1 (increased power, reduced emissions and combustion noise)
Optimized preheating system (improved cold-weather starting)
Exhaust gas recirculation with highly efficient cooling system (emissions reduction)
Maintenance-free close-coupled diesel particulate filter (DPF)
Pistons with oil-spray cooling
2.4 ECOTEC gasoline engine: Attractive alternative

As an alternative to the two diesel engines, a newly-developed 2.4 ECOTEC gasoline unit is also available for the enhanced Opel Antara. With 123 kW/167 hp and a maximum torque of 230 Nm (at 4,600 rpm), it combines an appealing character with high driving performance. As a front-wheel drive, this engine is available with a manual six-speed transmission, and in all-wheel drive format with either manual or automatic six-speed transmission.

The performance, fuel consumption and emissions data all confirm the effectiveness of this engine. The acceleration time (10.5 seconds), top speed (190 km/h), fuel consumption (8.8 l/100 km) and CO2 emissions (206 g/km) leave virtually nothing to be desired.

The 2.4 ECOTEC engine also offers many technological features. These include:

Continuously variable settings on the intake and exhaust camshafts (usable speed range, torque development, fuel economy)
Camshaft chain drive (reliability)
Noise-optimized piston-skirts
Aluminium engine block and cylinder head (weight, engine thermal)
Structural oil pan
Precision sensors to determine crank and camshaft positions (Timing fuel-mixture preparation, ignition)
Pistons with oil-spray cooling
On top of very low fuel consumption and emissions, the scope of servicing for the Opel Antara is also very limited: regular inspections for the gasoline and both diesel engines are only necessary every 30,000 kilometers or once a year. When oil should be changed is determined depending on use and driving conditions and is indicated by a motor oil service life gauge.

Optional manual or automatic transmission

Two new six-speed transmission systems, one manually-operated and one automatic, combine efficiency with dynamics and high driving comfort. High-tech details like precision-designed "Monoblock" gear wheels as well as intricately constructed synchronisation features and bearing elements in the manual gearbox ensure minimal operating force is needed, fluent gear changes, and low-vibration and low-friction operation.

A particular design feature of the automatic transmission is the deflection-free arrangement of gear-wheel pairs on the crankshaft centerline, which makes the transmission unit particularly compact and versatile. A widely-spaced overall ratio allows both an exceptionally responsive placing of the first gear and a "long" sixth stage for relaxed cruising with reduced fuel consumption at low rpm. Drivers have two driving programs available at the push of a button - depending on whether they want to "cruise" or drive more dynamically. The transmission also includes an automatic stage-by-stage braking system, which prevents unwanted upshifts in a rolling vehicle or while driving downhill.

Optional front-wheel or all-wheel drive

Depending on their specific needs, Antara buyers can choose their sporty, crossover model either with front-wheel or variable all-wheel drive. The latter combines the advantages of the front-wheel drive - such as low fuel consumption - with additional dynamics, power and active safety.

The main components of the electronically controlled all-wheel drive system ITCC (Intelligent Torque Controlled Coupling) are the electromagnetic pilot coupling and a hydraulic multi-plate wet clutch, which are incorporated in a single rear axle module unit. This is a solution that brings a number of advantages: it ensures quick response, it is compact, lightweight and maintenance-free.

Appropriate force distribution

While the front wheels are also responsible for propulsion in the all-wheel drive Opel Antara, prevailing driving conditions are continually being recorded and compared between the ITCC and electronic stability control (ESC) over parameters like wheel speed, steering angle and accelerator position.

If inadequate traction threatens to cause front-axle slippage, the system reacts within 0.1 seconds, seamlessly redistributing power. Depending on the driving situation and outside conditions, the power distribution range spans from 100 percent front-wheel drive to 50 percent on both front and rear axles, and all variations in between.

New Set-up: Enhanced Agility and More Ride Comfort

A wide range of modifications and fine-tuning measures have given the current Opel Antara greater dynamics and agility, thereby increasing driving fun and ride quality.

Changes to the front axle include optimized McPherson struts with increased spring rates, as well as a new upper strut mount, which is softer in the horizontal and vertical, but stiffer in the diagonal plane. In combination with a modified shock absorber layout and a reinforced stabilizer bar with enlarged bearings and softer guide sleeves, this ensures higher roll stiffness, more direct steering feel and improved ride comfort.

The multi-link rear suspension, with three transverse and one trailing link per side, has also been re-designed and fine-tuned. The trailing arms are now hydraulically damped for better structural isolation. Optimized strut mounts and coil springs with increased spring rates also attenuate the impact of road shocks. In combination with a reinforced stabilizer bar, a wide track (1,569 mm front, 1,576 mm rear) and a wheelbase which is long for this class of vehicle (2,707 mm), these measures guarantee improved road contact, increased driving stability and better balanced suspension comfort.

The new Antara's speed-related rack and pinion power steering system features a modified steering gear link and a reinforced intermediate shaft with a ball guide. The resulting increased system rigidity not only gives precise feedback from the vehicle to the driver, but also requires minimal effort when maneuvering.

The elegant all-rounder's braking system also meets the demands of high active safety and the chassis's excellent driving dynamics. Large, ventilated disc brakes front and rear are combined with an optimized four-channel ABS and brake assist function to ensure confidence-inspiring deceleration at all times and in all road conditions.

A wide range of leading-edge assist systems further enhance active safety. They include:

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) including ARP (Active Rollover Protection) and CBC (Cornering Brake Control)
HSA (Hill Start Assist) to eliminate roll-back on gradients
DCS (Descent Control System), which keeps the car at a maximum crawl speed of 10 km/h by braking the front wheels without any intervention by the driver when driving down steep slopes
Electronic yawing moment control AOD (Active on Demand), which helps to minimize understeer or oversteer by modulating drive torque between the front and rear axles
TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) monitors pressure with the aid of sensors integrated in the wheels and activates an individual wheel warning in the driver display if pressure losses exceed 0.3 bar
EDC (Engine Drag Control) in the diesel versions increases engine torque if there is any danger of the wheels locking (triggered by high engine-speed leaps when downshifting or quickly releasing the clutch during low traction)
Standard equipment for all-wheel drive variants includes automatic vehicle-level control, which maintains a constant ground clearance when loaded or pulling a trailer.

And the Opel Antara has a lot more to offer in terms of utility. All-wheel drive variants can tow loads of up to 2,000 kilograms (front-wheel drive: 1,500 kg) and the trailer stability program (TSP) also ensures any swaying tendencies of the car-trailer combination are recognized by a yaw sensor and effectively prevented by a reduction of engine power and controlled braking.

In addition to enhanced handling characteristics on the road, all-wheel drive Antaras also offer an impressive off-road capability. Detours on rougher terrain are facilitated by: the electronically controlled variable front/rear power distribution, a 176 mm ground clearance, a 450 mm wading depth, an overhang angle of 20 and 24 degrees front and rear, as well as a ramp angle of 18 degrees.

Depending on specification, the Opel Antara is fitted as standard with 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels (tire format 235/65 R 17 and 235/55 R 18). A new, eye-catching 8 x 19-inch wheel is optionally available in combination with 235/50 R 19 tires.

Excellent Comfort and High Functionality

The Opel Antara not only combines dynamics and driving performance with prestigious elegance, its thought-through body concept also offers a high degree of comfort and practical functionality. This begins with its length and width (4,596 x 1,850 mm) that don't take up more space than a normal mid-size car and make the striking crossover an ideal companion for urban driving. The elevated seating positions (vehicle height 1,717 mm) offer an unrestricted all-round view of the road, while the excellent powertrain characteristics and precise handling ensure agility, lively performance and trouble-free maneuvering.

The interior features sophisticated ergonomics one can actually feel thanks to comfortable headroom in front and rear and plenty of space for lateral movement. The rear passenger compartment features tiltable backrests and legroom (946 mm) that is among the most generous in the segment. The Opel Antara underlines its qualities as a vehicle ideal for traveling or as a variable crossover with convincing characteristics and practical features. Its luggage compartment can carry up to 420 liters of cargo in the normal configuration; this grows to 865 liters when the back seat is folded down and up to 1,420 liters when loaded to the roof. The rear backrest (split 60:40) and the front passenger backrest can be folded down to accommodate objects up to 2.63 meters in length.

Redesigned interior with high-quality ambience

To match its spacious comfort and premium interior design, the new Antara also offers "climatic" optimizations. The automatic, completely reworked climate control system with interior air filter guarantees a comfortable cabin climate and ambience.

The upgraded Opel Antara's interior features an electric parking brake operated by the push of a button that comes as standard. As well as offering a high degree of operating comfort, this also made it possible to completely redesign the center console with an armrest and to provide flexible and spacious storage areas for typical everyday items. The well thought-out storage system is rounded off by a pull-out compartment under the front passenger seat, a sunglasses holder in the roofliner, nets on the front seat backs and a parking ticket holder in the dashboard. The rear passenger cabin also offers practical storage spaces which can be expanded with a multifunctional center armrest (optional).

Tidiness in the cargo area is ensured by an under-floor compartment and the optional FlexOrganizer system. This includes two standard rails on both of the rear side walls into which various (optional) FlexOrganizer elements such as nets, partitions, rods or hooks can be clipped. This means that the luggage compartment can be divided into sections that secure the load and keep it from shifting.

Unbeatably practical: the integrated "FlexFix" bicycle carrier system

Another excellent example of innovation and practical functionality is the optional "FlexFix" rear bicycle carrier. It pulls out just like a drawer and can be set up quickly with minimal effort. When not in use it remains practically invisible, integrated in the rear bumper and thus eliminated as a possible disruption to the crossover's harmonious exterior design. FlexFix enables the transport of two bicycles (tire size 18 to 28 inches) while maintaining full on-board functionality. This means that the passenger compartment and the loading area space remain available without restriction and nothing has to be installed, dismantled or stored.

Extensive measures for maximum acoustic comfort

Other invisible but all the more noticeable innovations in the 2011 model year Opel Antara include an extensive range of measures for insulation against noise and vibration. This includes:

Hydraulic engine bearings (engine movement, idling vibrations)
Linkage of all-wheel drive components (noise transmission)
Electronic all-wheel drive control (transmission noise)
Chassis (road noise transmission)
Front frame structure (modified anchor points)
Front splash wall (insulation from engine noise)
Air intake and exhaust systems (flow noise)
Upper body structure (low-frequency rumbling noise)
Windshield with additional lamination (engine and wind noise)
Rubber door seals (engine and wind noise)
Body seals (wind noise)
Body water repellent (wind noise)
Rear body area (noise insulation from cargo area)
Other NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) measures to ensure acoustic comfort in the Opel Antara are on the front console, on the C and D pillars, the wheelarch liners and ceiling, steering column, gearshift and door trim. The efforts made by the acoustic specialists lead to a convincing result: the perceptible noise level in the interior of the new Opel Antara was reduced by over 3 dB (A) and thus more than halved.

The performance features of the on-board electronics were also enhanced. They now include systems for efficient control of the electrical on-board system and battery charge status ("RVC", Regulated Voltage Control) as well as for optimization of noise insulation and energy efficiency of the engine fan in the diesel versions ("PWM", Pulse Width Modulated).

High levels of passive safety

Complementing the chassis and assist systems' high active safety reserves, the Opel Antara also offers extensive passive safety features. They are based on a rigid bodyshell structure made up of 37 percent high-strength steel.

The side beam, cross bar and front axle, a robust instrument panel support member as well as reinforced front doors distribute collision energy from a frontal crash along optimized load paths, thus helping to prevent deformation of the passenger compartment. B-pillars constructed of tailored blank metal sheets with varying thickness ensure safety in the event of a side-impact collision. A reinforced rear structure with large longitudinal beams and a fuel tank positioned in front of the rear axle round off the body safety measures.

In the event of minor accidents at low speed, special crash boxes at the front and rear absorb the collision energy and thus limit potential repair costs. Opel has also taken precautions in terms of long-term quality: all of the corrosion-prone areas of the body are galvanized on both sides.

The Opel Antara's passive safety is further enhanced by extensive restraint and add-on systems including:

Front airbags
Side airbags for driver and front passenger
Head curtain airbags in front and rear/outer seats
Three-point safety belts on all five seats
Seat belt pretensioners and belt force limiters in front
Height-adjustable headrests on all five seats
Belt warning for driver and front passenger seat
ISOFIX mountings on outer rear seats to secure child safety seats
Seat occupation recognition with front passenger-side deactivation of front and side airbag to mount a child seat
Elegant Crossover with Clear Brand Connection

More than ever before, the re-worked Opel Antara showcases the combination of a sporty offroader with urban chic and high everyday functionality.

Exterior changes to the model year 2011 crossover include a newly designed front grille whose dynamic V form continues in the crease on the hood into the elegantly sloping A-pillars. The front grille's chrome bezel with its trademark chrome bar, a bold logo and new fog lamps accentuate Opel's sculptural design language and the crossover's upscale look.

Dark toned cladding around the doorsill and floor areas as well as distinctive underride protection are a clear sign of the Opel Antara's offroad capabilities on rough surfaces and unpaved roads. The rear features balanced proportions and a symmetry that sets the Opel Antara apart from the competition.

Clear contours reflect robustness and quality, while curves in the right places of the underbody, the waistline and the roof form a harmonious unit. The sporty Antara's eye-catching looks are rounded off by large rear wrap-around lights with newly designed surface graphics, rear underride protection and elegant alloy wheels in 17, 18 or 19-inch format.

"The meticulously enhanced design makes the Antara's new character visible," says Mark Adams, Vice President Design at Adam Opel AG. "The upgraded Antara embodies more driving dynamics and quality, and thus represents the product philosophy that reflects Opel brand standards."

Interior with new instruments, new materials and additional storage space

The dynamic crossover model's updated interior offers improved comfort and quality. More extensive standard equipment includes an electric parking brake that creates room for a newly designed center console with additional storage space. This also frees up space that benefits travel comfort in the front, where the seats offer sporty contours and six-stage or power eight-stage (optional) adjustment for superb ergonomics.

The refined interior also includes instruments with new bezels and distinctive, easy-to-read cluster graphics. New panelling and upholstery materials, the new (optional) leather trim Light Titanium and elegant interior lighting create a very high-quality look and feel.

"In sync with the exterior, the interior shows the development that the Opel Antara has successfully gone through," says Mark Adams. "A host of attractive details document a confident style that reinforces the emotional and dynamic elements of the crossover's overall character."

Comfort, Functionality and Individuality

Consistent with its position as a sophisticated crossover model with a wide variety of uses, the new Opel Antara offers high-class standard equipment, options and a broad range of accessories.

The 2011 Antara model generation comes standard with an electric parking brake that ensures easy drive away on grades, particularly in combination with Hill Start Assist (HSA) which is also standard.
